Imposition
The concept of the male gaze is one most women understand, know and are forced to face perpetually in this life. The foundation of gender relations and social normalcies has told women if we dress a certain way, act a certain way, exist in a certain way that we are inviting in the commentary and attention of men. It is next to impossible to exist as a confident woman without being viewed as a prospect or challenge. In my experience, being a feminine-presenting gay woman has only amplified the intensity of this imposition. The purity of my romantic relationships with other feminine-presenting women becomes threatened, invalidated, fetishized and oversexualized by those who believe they are entitled to do so. Imposition takes this narrative and places it directly on the body in the two areas of the female form that are most vulnerable and taken advantage of in physical, emotional and verbal ways. The fingers gripping and entering the mouth reflect on both the physical aggression as well as the energetic aggression of men who have taken advantage of my time and space. The piece that sits against the mons pubis symbolizes the uterus, as well as the vagina, with the addition of human teeth that act as a direct representation of self-protection (a bit of a bite back, if you will).
